While you can buy smoothies at smoothie shops and other restaurants in your neighborhood, making smoothies at home is really quick and easy, and much more economical in the long the run!

First up, you need a blender or a smart stick, or even a food processor can be used, if that’s what you have to hand. Basically, you just need something that can blend all the ingredients together.
There are many blenders and smoothie makers on the market, starting from about $15 to more than $500 for more powerful commercial-grade blender. If you don’t already own a blender, invest in one that matches how you will use it and your budget. If you only make smoothies once in a while, then a less expensive or multi-purpose machines will work.
If you enjoy smoothies often and think you’ll be making one or more a day, then it makes sense to invest in a more robust and powerful machine. Consider your requirements (your ingredients, frequency, and the quantity you will be making) when you buy your blender.
The Liquid or Base
Next is a liquid or base. Common liquids or bases include yogurt, milk, almond milk, or juice. The base allows the smoothie to become a drink consistency while maintaining some thickness and allowing the rest of the ingredients to blend together for a full flavor.
Fruit and/or Vegetables
Now it’s time to gather up your favorite fruit and vegetable combinations. Choose your primary flavors, such as orange and banana, strawberry, kiwi, and banana, triple berries, or even a more tropical mango and pineapple. Vegetable combinations work well too.
You can use fresh or frozen fruit and veggies, just be sure your blender has the power to mix it up. I’ve killed a couple cheap blenders with frozen bananas. You can also defrost frozen fruit to make it easier on your blender.
To add a nutritional boost, without affecting the flavor, you can also throw in a handful of spinach or kale, or even avocado. Other soft veggie purees or veggie juices can also be added to boost the nutritional value without affecting the flavor – a bonus if you have picky kids, or husbands!
Nutritional Boosts & Additives
Next add any other nutritional boosts. This is completely optional, and not necessary for a smoothie. But it’s an easy way to boost your nutrition—or that of your family—without much effort.
Nutritional boosts can include coconut oil (to boost the metabolism), flax seed oil or meal (for healthy Omega-3s), or other seeds or veggies. The fruit in your smoothie will take care of the sweetness, so there’s no need to add any sweeteners. But raw, local honey could be added to help those with allergies.
If you want to add a protein boost, you can add your own protein powder, soaked nuts, or nut butter also. Though if you are watching your calories, remember that if you used a yogurt or milk base, it also contains protein.
If you have a hard time taking your daily vitamins and minerals, your smoothie will give you a great nutrition platform, but you can also add powdered or liquid supplements as well. During cold and flu season or when we are traveling my son and I love to add a couple Emergen-C packets to get some extra nutrition.
Lastly, add a few cubes of ice to your smoothie. If you used fresh fruit and veggies, then you may want to increase it to a handful or two of ice, just to be sure your smoothie is nice and cool and refreshing.
